Red, Yellow and Green Saran Wrap | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

This manicure is a red, yellow and green Saran wrap manicure for one of the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas themes.

After far too many weeks out of the nail art loop, I have finally managed to jump back in. And this manicure is about four weeks late. In fact, the challenge is now over, and the next one has begun. But I still have two more manicures to complete after this one. I will make sure I finish them though, as then I will have done two years of a once-weekly challenge.

In fact, I did paint these nails at the time, but I just haven’t had the time to post them. I’m a freelance marketing consultant, and work has been busy, but more than that, I am on my son’s school’s parents’ association committee, and the time I have had to devote to that recently has meant I just haven’t been able to keep up with the blog … nor paint my nails. Hopefully things will change soon and the commitment needed there will lessen.

I was already wearing red on my nails: Nella Milano Scarlet Heat. To that, I have added Revlon Barry M Olive, a very pale, quite “dirty” green, using scrunched up cling film (Saran wrap). Finally, I added some yellow, using Revlon Buttercup. There seemed to be too much yellow on my nails, and I didn’t want to see too much green [regular readers will know I’m not a great fan of green] so I added some more red on top.

Red, yellow and green is not a great colour combination in my opinion. But I quite liked the effect of these nails.

Pink Mosaic Stripes | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

The 40 Great Nail Art Ideas group is doing hot pink and my personal prompt was mosaic or stained glass, so I have some pink mosaic stripes. Not all the polishes I used are hot pink, but then when you’re doing mosaic, you need lots of different colours.

My first attempt at mosaic nails began with me painting colours on my silicon mat and cutting them out. But I messed up by applying the pieces when the base was still too wet. So after lots of preparation and time invested, I scrapped that idea and tried something else.

I found a great mosaic stamping image on Bundle Monster plate BM-208. My nails are quite long at the moment and the image was a millimetre or two too short. So I came up with the idea of making just a few stamped decals and cutting each one into stripes, then using a piece on each nail.

The base is a very pale pink, Barry M Rose Hip. Then I stamped the Bundle Monster image using Mundo de Uñas Fiusha (20). I filled it in while it was still on the stamper with lots of different pink polishes:

  • Sinful Colors Forget Now, a jelly with a shimmer
  • Color Club Miss Bliss (holographic)
  • Barry M Birthday, the glittery Superdrug 50th birthday limited edition
  • Revlon Passionate Pink
  • OPI Kiss Me On My Tulips
  • and several other Barry Ms … Passion Fruit, Grapefruit, Pomegranate and Rose Hip

I top-coated the decal and left it to dry, then cut it into four. I needed three decals to do all my nails and simply placed a piece on each nail. I didn’t quite get the “up, down” staggered look I was going for on my photographed hand as I placed the decals too close to the middle for the index and middle nails.

Orange and Red Gradient Leopard Nails | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

Last Friday’s 40 Great Nail Art Ideas group theme was three shades of red/orange. My own personal prompt was leopard. The two worked OK together, so I was pleased, and the result is these orange and red gradient leopard nails.

The gradient is made from a pale orange (Revlon Sorbet), a mid orange (Barry M Block Orange) and a red (Barry M Blood Orange). The three colours combine for a really striking gradient. They’d be great as the base of a tropical silhouette manicure … you know, palm trees at sunset sort of thing.

To create the leopard spots, I used the end of the brush to roughly add some red over the light orange and vice versa. Then I used a dotting tool to add the black outlines.

I didn’t like it shiny, so added a matte top coat, which I much preferred.

This is the latest I’ve been with my 40 Great Nail Art Ideas manicure. I had a really busy Bank Holiday weekend watching my son play cricket each day. He played for his school, then for his club and then for Surrey District, completing wiping out all my weekend free time!

Pink and Cream Roses | Reverse Stamping | Moyra Florality 1 Plate

I did some reverse stamping using a new stamping plate from Moyra, and created these pink and cream roses.

Moyra is a relatively unknown brand in the UK at the moment. Their polishes were being sold in the UK via someone on a Facebook group about a year or more ago, but I don’t think it lasted very long and I hadn’t seen any talk about Moyra for ages, until fairly recently.

That was when I saw a review of Moyra stamping plates by an Italian blogger I follow. I was really interested in getting hold of the plates, but no-one here sold them. After asking Moyra’s head office in Hungary where I could buy some, they very generously sent me some items.

I am absolutely in love with the plates and now want all of them! I understand that two places in the UK will be stocking them soon: Nail Artisan and Rainbow Connection. (If you’re in Ireland, there is already a Moyra stockist).

There are 16 stamping plates, all of which are the same size as the ÜberChic Beauty plates. Those of you with long nails will love these plates as the images are longer and wider than Bundle Monster XL, MoYou XL and Born Pretty BPL plate images. The images on the Florality 1 plate measure 2.0 cm wide by 2.5 cm tall. They also come in a coloured cardboard cover, with a different design for each plate, making them nice and easy to find in your stash of plates!

Moyra also produces stamping polish. I haven’t tried it with this manicure, but will try it out and review it soon.

For this manicure, I painted a base of Revlon Vintage Rose and then used Konad Black to stamp a roses image from Moyra Florality 1 (Moyra Plate 6). I used the reverse stamping technique and filled the image in with OPI My Vampire Is Buff. I left the filled-in image on the stamper to dry, then I added top coat onto my nail and left it to dry until it was just slightly tacky. Then I stamped straight onto the nail. This method gives me the most success. If I stamp, fill in, top coat and then remove from the stamper when dry, when I transfer the image to my nail, I get bubbling and smearing problems. This way gives the best results by far.

I did manage to lose the bottom corner of the image for my middle finger though, so I just painted a little more cream polish over that to disguise my mess up!

Dandelion Nails | Things That Fly | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

These dandelion nails are for the “things that fly” prompt for the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas group

I really wanted to have dragonflies on my nails, but could only find a solitary one on a Bundle Monster plate. So I thought I’d try to be a little different and go for a non-animal/insect flying thing. (There will probably be fifteen different sets of dandelion nails now!)

The base is Revlon Spanish Moss, a dark sage green. I don’t typically like greens, but I can handle this one. It is dusky and muted; quite a classy shade.

I had it in my head that it would look good stamped with cream. My Mundo de Uñas Cream is a little more light yellow than cream usually, but over this base it does come over fairly creamy.

I used Born Pretty Store plate BPL-026 for the stamping. It’s a fabulous plate – full of very “me” vine and leaf images.

My favourite Fab Ur Nails red firm stamper didn’t want to play today, so I used for the first time a new Born Pretty Store large red stamper that I bought very recently. It picked up just as nicely as my FUN one usually does, so I am very pleased. Excluding dupes, I now have about fifteen different stampers. I shall have to do a review on them all one day.

You can use my 10% discount code – ZSL91 – for any item on the Born Pretty Store website that isn’t already reduced.
