Orange, Blue and Cream: K is for: Kitchen Sink

This week in the A2Z series challenge it’s K, and that means Kitchen Sink. A kitchen sink manicure is where you use “everything but the kitchen sink”. So it’s a bit like a skittlette, only all the nails are different, and you use a different technique for each one. Usually though, there is some sort of theme and/or the colours are consistent.

I chose cream, orange and blue and have an assortment of things on my nails. I used OPI My Vampire Is Buff, Rimmel Navy Seal and Barry M Mango.

I started with the water marble, in case it didn’t work out well, but I love it. It came out really well and I kind of wish I had it on all my nails. But that would defeat the purpose, eh!

The ring finger nail is a simple cream base with small square studs that I painted in the orange and blue polishes I used.

For the little finger nail, I freehanded the fishtail chevron tips. I was convinced I’d have to re-do it, but the Gods were on my side and it looked OK.

I completed the index finger nail last. I was thinking of stamping blue on cream, or doing a dotticure, but finally I opted to try some water colour bubbles. The effect is great, but I’m not entirely happy with it. I used the polishes watered down with acetone, and for a few of the bubbles I wasn’t quick enough and the acetone ate away the centres. Top coat filled those in nicely, but it isn’t as clean looking as I had pictured. Not bad for a first try though. I think the acrylic paint approach and water might be better for this technique and I might just give that a go soon.

After I’d finished this, I wish I had done the nails in a different order. I think the bubbles and the water marble are too similar, so should be further apart from each other. Perhaps I should have swapped the bubbles with the chevron tips. Balancing skittlette / kitchen sink manicures is not my forte.

Thanks Jessica (I’m picturing your accent as you “say” that, but I have no idea where in the US you’re from, so I’m probably way off the mark!)
