Black and White Dots | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

Today, the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas theme is black and white, and my personal pattern is dots. My black and white dots weren’t created with a dotting tool though, but with stencils.

I painted a base of Nella Milano Raven Wing, then added the dots using Nella Milano Chantilly Cream.

I used some stencils from Bundle Monster to add the dots. They came in a pack of nine different patterns and two different styles. You can buy either the geometric shapes set – which these dots come from – or the Sunny Weather Fun set, which has an assortment of shapes like butterflies, dolphins, anchors, hearts/clubs/spades/diamonds, mermaid scales. Nothing to do with the weather at all as far as I can tell!

I found the stencils quite difficult to get used to. In fact, I didn’t master them until the final nail. I pressed the stencils down well and painted over them and removed them immediately. The instructions – which aren’t in great English – say to leave them to dry before removing. Now, I’ve never had any luck with this approach for any other stencils or tape, so I ignored that. However, I think the stencils stretch slightly as you remove them, and that’s what seems to mess up the image a little.

I badly messed up the index finger twice. I removed the whole nail, including the black, both times and it wasn’t until the third attempt that I got it right. This is the best nail of all, and what I did differently was to actually take a bit more time over it. I painted a lighter, thinner coat, and then went over it straight away with another light coat. I still removed the stencil straight away, but it came off far cleaner. I think the first coat was probably almost dry even before the second one went on, and I think there was therefore less wet polish to pool and get dragged around.

Before doing that nail, I wasn’t too pleased with these stencils. But I now feel confident that I have them sussed and am keen to use some of the other designs. There are triangles, checks, diamonds, zigzags, stars, stripes, a mosaic pattern and more. I think perhaps dabbing the polish on with a sponge would improve things even more.
