Orange Reciprocal Gradient Zigzags | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

Orange reciprocal gradient: this is my first ever reciprocal gradient. I don’t know why I haven’t done one before now. So, I’m glad therefore that it’s come up as my personal prompt for the orange theme in this week’s 40 Great Nail Art Ideas group.

I added zigzags as the element to differentiate the two reversed gradients. After seeing a manicure by Caffeinated Cuticles (Jenn) on Instagram, I chose to “misalign” the zigzags nail vinyls so that they created little boxes, rather than zigzagged lines. I liked the way she’d done it, so copied it.

I left two nails bare. I’m a lazy manicurist these days and rarely “accent” more than three nails per hand. It saves so much time. I usually do just the two centre nails and my thumbs. I did gradient the other nails though, as I thought it made it more interesting overall than a plain orange colour would have been.

I used three orange nail polishes for the two gradients. Firstly, I used Barry M Full Throttle, a light, pastel orange as my palest colour. Then I chose Nella Milano Chilli Blaze, a medium orange. And finally, Nella Milano Cystal Coral. There’s nothing coral about it at all though; it’s a full-on red-orange.

In hindsight, I think I should have mattified it, as the light reflections in the photos stop you being able to see the pattern so well.

Next week the theme is “inspiration”. Who knows what I’ll be inspired by for that! At the moment I am completely clueless.

Summer Gradient | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

This is my summer gradient for the summer prompt of the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas group.

I had all but caught up last week and was going to post this last weekend, but then my son decided to get a fish bone stuck in his throat. That led to 26 hours in three different hospitals, including an emergency operation and then was followed by four days of trauma, complications and consultant appointments. I’m pleased to say that the bone has gone, but my son is left with only half of his uvula, the other half having turned white and dropped off – yikes!

So, I didn’t catch up after all, and I’m left trying to post as much as possible this weekend. I have this plus another three manicures to create, photograph and post before I even catch up.

Before the medical trauma, I was already going to post this. It’s a bit of a cheat as it’s the gradient I did for this tribal gradient stamping a couple of months ago. But as I didn’t post the gradient on its own, I feel it’s fair game to use it for this.

I was inspired by the colours of the Sky logo to create this. The blue didn’t take quite so well, and also didn’t combine with the pink to make a purple. You could only see it a little, so I added it in on the tips using the brush. You couldn’t really see that under the stamping I did before, but it’s a bit more evident here. Having said that, I don’t dislike it.

Baby Boomer Music Nails | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

The prompt a little while ago (yes, I’m late again!) for the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas group was music. I stamped some musical notes onto a gradient to create these baby boomer music nails.

The base is a French tips gradient of nude and white, to create “baby boomer” nails. Baby boomer nails were a bit of a thing a while ago, and while I’ve worn them before, I haven’t ever blogged about them. I still can’t quite figure out exactly where the term “baby boomer” comes from. The closest I can get is that during the baby boom era – the 1960s – the fashion was to wear white nails, and this look is inspired by that.

For the base, I used Nella Milano Peach Schnapps and Barry M Cotton. It looked a bit too pink when I’d finished though, so I went over it again with the white and Orly Pink Nude this time, to tone down the colour a bit. You can see that the final colour at the cuticle end of my nails is far less pink than the polish in the bottle.

I stamped some musical notes on top, which obscures the blend of the gradient somewhat.

I am trying to desperately catch up. Last Friday’s prompt was “hot pink” – and I still haven’t done that yet – and there’s this Friday’s “wedding” theme still to do as well.

Wish me luck!

Orange and Red Gradient Leopard Nails | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

Last Friday’s 40 Great Nail Art Ideas group theme was three shades of red/orange. My own personal prompt was leopard. The two worked OK together, so I was pleased, and the result is these orange and red gradient leopard nails.

The gradient is made from a pale orange (Revlon Sorbet), a mid orange (Barry M Block Orange) and a red (Barry M Blood Orange). The three colours combine for a really striking gradient. They’d be great as the base of a tropical silhouette manicure … you know, palm trees at sunset sort of thing.

To create the leopard spots, I used the end of the brush to roughly add some red over the light orange and vice versa. Then I used a dotting tool to add the black outlines.

I didn’t like it shiny, so added a matte top coat, which I much preferred.

This is the latest I’ve been with my 40 Great Nail Art Ideas manicure. I had a really busy Bank Holiday weekend watching my son play cricket each day. He played for his school, then for his club and then for Surrey District, completing wiping out all my weekend free time!

Tribal Gradient Stamping with CICI&SISI Ethnic Elements | Twinsie Tuesday

The Twinsie Tuesday prompt this week is gradient stamping, so I have tribal gradient stamping manicure. It’s a summery, festival kind of look with a hot gradient, stamped with an image from CICI&SISI Ethnic Elements (plate 33).

My gradient is inspired by the colours in the Sky logo. I keep seeing it on TV and have long thought it would make a great gradient for nails.

I used Nella Milano Peach Schnapps as the base for the gradient. I used to paint a white base, but always ended up with undies peeking out after I had cleaned up. I can’t recall where I read it, but someone else wrote that they used a nude base for gradients, and I’ve done it the past few times and been very impressed.

For the gradient itself, I used four colours: Beauty UK Bon Bon (yellow), Barry M Block Orange, Barry M Pomegranate (pink) and Barry M Blue Grape.

It’s stamped with Essence Stamp Me! Black and an image from CICI&SISI Ethnic Elements (plate 33), from the Jumbo 6 set.
