Summer Gradient | 40 Great Nail Art Ideas

This is my summer gradient for the summer prompt of the 40 Great Nail Art Ideas group.

I had all but caught up last week and was going to post this last weekend, but then my son decided to get a fish bone stuck in his throat. That led to 26 hours in three different hospitals, including an emergency operation and then was followed by four days of trauma, complications and consultant appointments. I’m pleased to say that the bone has gone, but my son is left with only half of his uvula, the other half having turned white and dropped off – yikes!

So, I didn’t catch up after all, and I’m left trying to post as much as possible this weekend. I have this plus another three manicures to create, photograph and post before I even catch up.

Before the medical trauma, I was already going to post this. It’s a bit of a cheat as it’s the gradient I did for this tribal gradient stamping a couple of months ago. But as I didn’t post the gradient on its own, I feel it’s fair game to use it for this.

I was inspired by the colours of the Sky logo to create this. The blue didn’t take quite so well, and also didn’t combine with the pink to make a purple. You could only see it a little, so I added it in on the tips using the brush. You couldn’t really see that under the stamping I did before, but it’s a bit more evident here. Having said that, I don’t dislike it.

Christmas Challenge 2013 Day 5: Toys

I was really stumped about what to do when it came to this toys prompt for the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts Christmas Winter Challenge.

Then, I was listening to Absolute Radio, and on Christian O’Connell’s breakfast show, he was saying he was having trouble getting his daughter a Furby Boom, as everywhere was sold out. I thought Furbies were a 1990s thing, but apparently they are back. And this year they are set to be the Christmas toy.

So that had me decided and I set about trying to recreate Furbies on my finger nails!

I’ve done two of them: Sweet Zig Zag and Polka Dot.

Both Furby nails have two coats of Sinful Colors Snow Me White as a base, and then these are the polishes used for each one:

  • for Polka Dot: the body is Barry M Fuchsia with white dots in Sinful Colors Snow Me White; the feet and ears are Barry M Turquoise with accents done in Sinful Colors Snow Me White; the eyes are Barry M Lemon Ice Cream, Sinful Colors Snow Me White and W7 Black; the eyelids are Barry M Turquoise; the beak is Beauty UK Bon Bon; and the tongue is Barry M Blood Orange.
  • for Sweet Zig Zag: I added zig zag guides and painted W7 Black over the top; the feet and ears are Barry M Guava with accents done in Sinful Colors Snow Me White; the eyes are Essie Orange, it’s Obvious, Sinful Colors Snow Me White and W7 Black; the eyelids are Barry M Guava; the beak is Beauty UK Bon Bon; and the tongue is Barry M Blood Orange.

My index finger nail has one coat of Barry M Guava (should have done two) and my little finger has two coats of Barry M Fuchsia.

Kitchen Sink Saturday … er make that Monday: blue

I didn’t manage to get around to doing a kitchen sink manicure last Saturday. So here’s it is now … a couple of days late.

I was already wearing Chanel Blue Boy, and had added the leopard spots accent nail. But as I wasn’t entirely happy with the leopard nail, I went over the inside of the spots with a lighter blue (Revlon Dreamer) and then also had to re-do the outlines too. The lighter colour makes it stand out a little more, but it still could be executed better.

For the other nails, I dotted on some flowers, did a half moon, added some glitter and did a saran wrap / cling film manicure.

The glitter is Claire’s Teal Holographic. I haven’t used this before, and it’s a shame it’s snowy and dull today, because in sunlight (or even with overhead lights) this sparkles a full rainbow of colours. I can’t wait to wear this more when Britain starts to get some sun again.

The half moon and the cling film manicure are lovely, but my favourite is the dotted flowers. At some stage I must do these on all my nails. They aren’t perfect, but it’s only my second time trying them, so hopefully they will improve with practice.

Details of the polishes used for each nail are below.

For this manicure I’ve used:
  • Base: two coats of Chanel Blue Boy
  • Thumb: dotted flowers using China Glaze White On White and Beauty UK Bon Bon
  • Index: half moon using Barry M Foil Effects Silver
  • Middle: glitter nail using Claire’s Teal Holographic
  • Ring: taped silver diagonal using Barry M Foil Effects Silver; stamped leopards using Calvin Klein Ebony Hates Chris-Black and Cheeky plate CH1; filled in with Revlon Dreamer and outlined with the same black
  • Little: saran wrap / cling film manicure using Revlon Dreamer
  • Top coat: Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Anti-Chip
