33DC Roundup

So, I’ve just completed my first ever challenge: the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts 33 Day Challenge.

I am really pleased that I managed to keep up with it. I’m not really one for swatching my nails and then scheduling posts. I’ve always just posted what I’m currently wearing on my nails. So this was the first time that I did some of the challenges in advance. But – apart from one – I never did any manicures more than a few days early, and most of the time I did them the day before or on the day. But I always managed to post my manicure in time, which at the beginning of all this, I never thought would be possible.

It was really enjoyable and very good for me as it pushed me to try a little harder. I’ve had tons of manicures pinned that I want to try out, and this challenge actually made me do a lot of them for once.

Here are all my challenge manicures. If you want to know more about any of them, such as the polishes or techniques I used, click on the image and you’ll be taken to the original post.

33DC Day 33: freestyle / recreate someone else’s mani

Well, this is it. It’s the very last day of the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts 33 Day Challenge.

Today, we can either do anything we like (freestyle) or we can recreate another manicure from the challenge. There have been so many brilliant manicures, but I really fell in love with a very simple, but really well executed manicure from very early on in the challenge.

It was done by Tracy of Poorly Polished, who doesn’t blog, but who added the photo to the Crumpet’s Nail Group, from where I pinned it:

Gorgeous, isn’t it? It’s a simple design, but very elegant.

Well, her nails are about the same length as mine, and I love navy blue, so this was the one I decided to recreate.

I chose L’Oréal Midnight Mistress for the navy. It’s a very deep colour, almost black. I’d picked it up very recently – along with a backup – for just £1 in Poundland. Then I’ve done the dots using Sinful Colors Snow Me White. I used my largest dotting tool for the large dots, and my second smallest one for the small ones.

I have really enjoyed doing this challenge. It’s pushed me to try new techniques and to be more adventurous with my nail art than ever before.

I’ll post a round up of all my manicures tomorrow.

33DC Day 32: shapes

It’s the penultimate day of the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts 33 Day Challenge and today the prompt is shapes.

I was looking back over the manicures I’ve done for this challenge and it was very apparent that I’ve hardly used green or yellow in my manicures. I love yellow, so that surprised me; but I don’t really like green at all, so there was no shock there. I set out to rectify the colour imbalance and picked out some yellows and greens and teamed them with some reds and browns that looked like autumn leaf colours. I thought I’d do some triangles or perhaps some squares like this So Nailicious manicure.

Then I did a complete swerve and decided to use a dark green and mint green combination. It came out of nowhere, but I love it and think it goes really well with the white background.

I used striping tape to mark off the squares, which took me ages. Then I filled in the squares using Barry M Watermelon, a deep teal green, and SpaRitual Delight, a gorgeous mint green. I had to re-do two nails because I hadn’t got the striping tape completely flat and they had ended up looking like trapezoids rather than squares!

That’s it – just one manicure left to go. See you Friday when the plan is – at the moment – to recreate someone else’s manicure from the very first challenge.

33DC Day 31: art featuring your three favourite polishes

Day 31 of the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts 33 Day Challenge calls for me to do some artwork with my 3 favourite polishes. Picking your favourite polishes is like choosing between your children. It’s impossible. (OK, who am I to make that comparison – my son is an only child!)

But still, it’s very difficult to choose just 3 polishes. The way I came up with 3 polishes was to start by picking my favourite colours: navy and turquoise. And then because both polishes that matched that selection were Barry M polishes, I added in a third one, and it’s one that makes me happy, a bright pink.

So my polishes were Barry M: Fuchsia, Turquoise and Blackberry. Now what was I going to do with them? I’d tried a water marble for a previous challenge and it had gone terribly wrong, so I thought I’d give it another go.

I’m pleased I did, because apart from a few water bubbles on my middle and ring fingers, I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. The colours work well together and because I dipped all four fingers together, there’s some continuity between them.

We’re finally in the last week of the challenge. I never thought I’d make it this far, and now there are just two more manicures to go. I think I’ll feel a bit bereft when it finishes. Oh no – scrub that – I’ve decided to do a Christmas nails challenge too.

33DC Day 30: the same pattern, different colours

I had a lovely manicure planned for Day 30 of the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts 33 Day Challenge. It would have used seventeen different polishes! But, I hadn’t had time to make a start on it until today, so I decided that, on top of all the work I have to do today, my complicated manicure was just too much to take on. So it’s been shelved; hopefully to be resurrected another time.

In its place, I have done a simple half moon manicure using different coloured polishes and matching studs.

I started with a base colour of NYC Pinstripe White. It’s a lovely creamy colour, that I forgot I owned. The formula was quite thin, so I needed three coats, and it also tended to pool into the cuticles, but it’s a great colour for nail art so I’ll forgive it its issues and will remember to use it more often.

Then I used hole reinforcers to mark off the half moon shapes and painted on the different colours:

  • Blue: Collection 2000 BMX Bandit
  • Orange: Barry M Mango
  • Purple: Rimmel Oh Boy You’re So Fine
  • Green: Essie Navigate Her

The studs are gold ones that I bought from She Sells Seashells, which I’ve just painted using the same polishes.

Wow! Only a week to go now. Just three more manicures until the challenge is over.
