Christmas Challenge 2013 Roundup

Now that the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts Christmas Winter Challenge is over, I thought I’d do a roundup of my manicures.

This is only my second challenge, and while fairly easy because it was only two manicures a week, I’m still pleased that I managed to keep up with it and posted on time for each one.

Here are all my manicures from the challenge. If you want to know about the polishes I used or how I did a manicure, just click on the image to go to the original post.

My favourites are definitely the Furby Boom characters, as that’s a completely unique manicure, not inspired by or copied from anyone. It also took an absolute age to do, waiting for each element to dry before adding the next tiny detail, and I’m proud of the effort I put into it. I wouldn’t ordinarily wear something like this on my nails, but it was fun to do for a challenge.

I got lots of lovely compliments about the trees and the penguins, but I did love my holly nails and wore them for ages.

Which ones are your favourites?

Christmas Challenge 2013 Day 8: New Year’s Eve

So, on this last day of the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts Christmas Winter Challenge we’re celebrating New Year’s Eve (a few days early!)

I went with some multi-coloured blingy glitter over black.

The base is W7 Black and the multi-coloured circle glitter is the very appropriately named Auld Lang Syne from Tara’s Talons. I chose Auld Lang Syne as my prize from Tara’s Talons when I won a recent giveaway held by Model City Polish. The prize was sponsored by nine UK indie polish makers, so I have so many lovely new UK indies on their way to me, which I’m really excited about. I got to choose which polish I wanted from Tara, and Auld Lang Syne just called out to me. I do love circular glitter and the colours in this really complement each other well. Tara sent my prize straight away, and seeing as it was Christmas week, I think that was just amazing of her.

For the stars on the accent nail, I made my own stencils using painter’s tape that I cut out using a star-shaped craft punch. The stars were quite large, so I put two part stars on the nail. I had ordered a smaller star punch before Christmas, which would have worked better, but it hasn’t arrived yet.

I was a bit too hasty with my top-coating, and so there are some bubbles over the circle glitter nails. It’s a lovely colourful manicure though.

Christmas Challenge 2013 Day 7: Winter characters

Today’s prompt in the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts Christmas Winter Challenge is Winter Characters.

I did these nails back at the end of October, on top of my SpaRitual Intellect manicure. The blue and shimmer of Intellect reminded me of a wintry sky, so I thought I’d add something Christmassy, and penguins seemed an easy choice.

The penguin bodies are done using W7 Black, then I’ve used dotting tools to add the detail in Barry M Matt White, Essie Orange It’s Obvious, Barry M Blood Orange and W7 Black.

I hope you’re having a lovely Boxing Day (if you’re in the UK, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa or another part of the Commonwealth that celebrates it!) There’s just one more prompt left for this challenge, and I’ll be back with something sparkly no doubt to celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Christmas Challenge 2013 Day 6: Christmas food

Christmas food was another tough challenge for me in the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts Christmas Winter Challenge.

I didn’t really know what to do, and spent ages trawling through images of Christmas fayre for some inspiration. Ultimately, I couldn’t come up with anything original to do, so I went with the standard candy canes French tip manicure. I think I may have done my lines a bit too close together, so it looks a bit more red than white, but in my defence, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a real candy cane.

I used NYC Pinstripe White for the tips. It’s usually a great French tip white as it’s ivory rather than bright white, but in this case, I think a brighter white would have been better. I added a coat of Barry M Nude over the whole nail before adding in the diagonal stripes using red acrylic paint. I have bought a wonderful new tool, a nail art pen, that made it so easy to draw on the lines. It’s fantastic and I cannot wait to use it for more intricate things; I’m sure it will improve my nail art no end.

Finally, I added in the silver edging using a silver Nailene Stripe FX striper. I’m not wildly excited by this manicure. You can see my stained nails through the base colour for a start.

There are just two more challenge manicures to go. I’ve already done my Winter Characters – I did it some time ago before I even knew about this challenge. And then there’s the New Year’s manicure, which I expect will be blingy.

Christmas Challenge 2013 Day 5: Toys

I was really stumped about what to do when it came to this toys prompt for the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts Christmas Winter Challenge.

Then, I was listening to Absolute Radio, and on Christian O’Connell’s breakfast show, he was saying he was having trouble getting his daughter a Furby Boom, as everywhere was sold out. I thought Furbies were a 1990s thing, but apparently they are back. And this year they are set to be the Christmas toy.

So that had me decided and I set about trying to recreate Furbies on my finger nails!

I’ve done two of them: Sweet Zig Zag and Polka Dot.

Both Furby nails have two coats of Sinful Colors Snow Me White as a base, and then these are the polishes used for each one:

  • for Polka Dot: the body is Barry M Fuchsia with white dots in Sinful Colors Snow Me White; the feet and ears are Barry M Turquoise with accents done in Sinful Colors Snow Me White; the eyes are Barry M Lemon Ice Cream, Sinful Colors Snow Me White and W7 Black; the eyelids are Barry M Turquoise; the beak is Beauty UK Bon Bon; and the tongue is Barry M Blood Orange.
  • for Sweet Zig Zag: I added zig zag guides and painted W7 Black over the top; the feet and ears are Barry M Guava with accents done in Sinful Colors Snow Me White; the eyes are Essie Orange, it’s Obvious, Sinful Colors Snow Me White and W7 Black; the eyelids are Barry M Guava; the beak is Beauty UK Bon Bon; and the tongue is Barry M Blood Orange.

My index finger nail has one coat of Barry M Guava (should have done two) and my little finger has two coats of Barry M Fuchsia.
