Christmas Challenge 2013 Day 3: Holiday colours

Today’s prompt for the Crumpet’s Nail Tarts Christmas Winter Challenge is holiday colours.

So, like everyone else I presume, I thought of red, gold and green. As ever, I wasn’t immediately struck by the inspiration gods, and so asked my husband what he thought I should do. He said a harlequin design, which after a little thought on my part became an Argyle pattern instead.

I found a fabulous pattern to recreate on a dog jumper of all things (do dogs really need jumpers?).

I started with a base of Color Club Ho-Ho-Holly, which I won back in July as part of a giveaway run by Inky Whiskers. It’s a fabulous foil-like shimmery green. Now, I really dislike green, but this looked wonderful on my nails; it was so sparkly and I found myself looking at my nails all the time while I waited for them to dry. Then I taped off some triangles and painted the sparkly red, another win from the same giveaway, Color Club Berry And Bright.

Finally I added the gold lines using Barry M Christmas Gold and a striping brush. I’m not very practised at free-handing striped lines yet, but these aren’t too bad – my right hand is pretty dire though.

The Color Club polishes are scented. The green one smelled like old lady’s perfume, but the red one was quite nice. My photos just don’t do the sparkle in this manicure justice. My photographic lights have daylight bulbs, but real sunlight or even normal domestic lighting really shows off the beauty of the shimmery foil finish of these.

Next up is Christmas traditions – I have so many different thoughts running through my head about this one, so I’m not sure where it’s going to take me yet. In the meantime, I’ll just enjoy my Argyle nails – they’re getting an outing to a Christmas party later on.

I’m probably laughing more than I should at the thought of someone having a ‘dog jumper manicure’. Very festive. The nails not dog jumpers. And now I’m wondering if dogs have Christmas jumpers à la Gyles Brandreth. Hm.

Claire Kerr

I think dogs *do* have Gyles Brandreth jumpers. (Not that I’ve just been off to Google images looking for “Christmas dog jumpers” to find out!)

Helena

I love the look of this manicure! It looks like it has texture!

Claire Kerr

Yes, you’re right – the foil effect finish of the polish gives it a bit of depth, I think. I didn’t thin that had come through in the photos, but perhaps it has.

Inky Whiskers

Those are festive nails for sure! I’m glad your prize came in handy. LOL Oh! You can stamp with those Color Club polishes too. <3

Claire Kerr

It’s a shame that my photos didn’t show the real sparkle – they’re so lovely. Bonus about the stamping too 🙂
